Background

What is the biomass?

Biomass(BM) is a plant source containing chemical energy converted from light energy through photosynthesis, and its potential as the future energy source has obtained much attention. Biomass can be used as a raw material for biofuel and chemicals. However, the first generation of of biomass represented by sugarcane and corn brought confilct with food, and its vast land requirement can destroy alarge area of forest, which has acted as lungs of the earth.

The second generation, lignocellulosic biomass, has two major problems: costly pretreatment of saccharification and slow growth rate. The third generation of biomass, algal biomass, is the most promising biological source to replace petroleum due to its strong points such as high lipid content and growth rate. The algal biomass is the hope and the future for humankind, on which worldwide efforts should be concentrated in research and devel-opment.
